Institute of Translational Medicine

The Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) is a unique opportunity for University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Birmingham, to provide a world-class research and clinical treatment centre in Birmingham.ITM brings together academics and practitioners from the city’s teaching hospitals and the University of Birmingham that translates groundbreaking research directly into world-class treatments for serious conditions such as cancer and liver disease.

The project transformed Lanchester & Lodge’s pioneering 1930s Queen Elizabeth Hospital building.  The original QE hospital building is a socially, historically and culturally important landmark in Birmingham and the renovation and refurbishment was handled with a sensitive, delicate touch to emphasise and safeguard the architectural features.  The simplified internal arrangement brings both light, life and cohesion to the plan whilst retaining the grand character of the existing building.
